Local oil company in hunt for NZ Food Awards

An Ashburton company that makes speciality oils is vying with deer milk powder, giant salmon and cultured vegan butter as finalists for the New Zealand Food Awards.

Midlands Nutritional Oils Rapeseed Oil is a finalist for the artisan award, one of 11 categories, and Bakers of Geraldine also has two products in the category.

Midlands Nutritional Oils supplies specialty oils to food, skincare and health markets throughout the world.

Deer milk powder by by state-owned farming company Landcorp, which uses the brand name Pamu, is dual finalist in the primary sector award and the novel food and beverage award categories.

Deer milk is new to grocery shelves, as is Ora King Tyee Salmon from New Zealand King Salmon, and cultured vegan butter from Savour.

One of the 11 category winners will be announced as the supreme award winner of the awards function in Auckland on October 17. The awards celebrate creative innovations from Kiwi food and beverage manufacturers, from Artisan products to large-scale companies.

Among the finalist line-up in the awards, established by Massey University in 1987 are winners from previous years such as Barker's, the Pure Food Co, Epic Brewing Company and Proper Crisps.
